Workshop on the "Concerns of the Elderly: Church/Community Interventions" was jointly organised by CSI Synod Youth Department and CSI SEVA from 4th to 5th Jan 2018.
The workshop brought together care givers of the elderly, those in-charge of elder facilities in the dioceses, the youth directors of the dioceses along with one more young person from each diocese, elders from homes in chennai /Madras Diocese and elders from Elders Fellowships in congregations in Chennai. This is a move to inspire, initiate and challenge youth to take up the concerns of the elderly as their campaign and devise ways to bridge the gap between challenges of elders, resources available in us as a Church, and how to focus those to cater to the rights and concerns of the elderly.
It was a time for sharing from the elders about their pain, joys, challenges, and a time of listening for the younger people to ponder and strategise. A beginning of another exciting journey for the CSI as the youth commit to advocate and act for elders' rights and accompany the elders in order to create wholesome communities as a body of Christ.
Rev. Dr. Rathnakara Sadananda, General Secretary, CSI inaugurated the workshop with a resounding call for Strategic Listening to and Strategic Accompaniment with the concerns of the elderly, which can only happen when we truly care. Rt. Rev. Dr. George Stephen, Bishop in Madras delivered the concluding address and committed to instituting a Director for Elderly concerns in the diocese of Madras and also issued a call to all dioceses to follow the initiative of the Synod in this workshop to create departments at diocese levels bringing together both the young and the elderly.
Dr. Ravi Samuel, pschyotherapist and Founder Trustee "Vision Age India" was the Resource Person for the workshop. Rev. Asir Ebenezer, Director, CSI -SEVA, and Rev. Solomon Paul, Director, CSI Synod Youth Department were the main facilitators who guided the workshop.
