Dornakal Diocese organises Disability Conclave

The Special Institution in the Diocese of Dornakal, St. Mary’s Rehabilitation Centre, Khammam organised the Disability Conclave as a part of CSI Disability Octave on 27th November, 2016 under the leadership of the Bishop Rt. Rev Vadapalli Prasada Rao in which 43 Children With Special Needs (CWSN) and 68 parents participated.

The St. Mary’s Rehabilitation centre in a 44 year old special institutions which was established in 1972 as a residential care giving/ care taking educational centre for 12 CWSN affected with Polio which grew up to 114 by 1991. This initiative was started by Dr. Claire Heuton, an Australian physiotherapist who rendered yeomen services for more than 25 years. As the effects of Polio Virus began to decline, the home was upgraded into a rehabilitation centre in 2006nwhich renders educational, medical and empowering services to 179 children with multiple disability covering over 17 villages around khamman through Community Institutional Based Intervention (C.I.B.I).

The Conclave was graces by Mr. John Samadhanam, Rev D. B. D Ravindra, Diocese Secretary, Mr. S. Naveen Kumar, Child Protection Officer, Board of Child Cave, Rev. Y. Vedarathnam and the local presbyters.

Mr. John Samadhanam, Program Executive, CSI DISHA addressed the gathering explaining the disability ministry of CSI and the importance of building more able Churches. The Diocesean Secretary in his discourse stressed upon the role of protocol ministry in mainstreaming the CWSN and the Persons with Disability (PwD) in our Church and Society creating equal oppurtunities and full participation in the Life, Witness and Ministry.

Mr. Prabhakar Rao, Co-ordinator of the center wished to take the disability initiatives in the diocese. forwarded for the betterment and empowerment of this special people. Mr. Naveen Kumar bought greetings from the BCC and emphasised the pertinence of disability among the children.

The CWSN enthralled the gathering through the reading of the Bible in braille and the culturals exhibiting their gifts and abilities. The conclavers vowed to become an able church in the diocese of Dornakal
